Superintendent's Message

Message from the Superintendent of Unified School District #9

It has been a very busy summer here in the Littlefield Unified School District. There are a number of significant changes that parents and community members will be happy to learn.

First, I am extremely excited about the construction progress at Beaver Dam High School. We recently planted the grass on the football field, and it is slowly starting to green up. We expect to have it ready for the first football game which is scheduled for late September.

The new wing on the high school is also coming along. With six new classrooms, a media room and large commons area, we will not know what to do with all of the new space! There are also irrigation lines stubbed up around the building so we hope to be working on landscaping this fall.

Speaking of the high school building, the District Governing Board recently approved a bond proposal for the election in November. If passed, the bonds (in the amount of $1,250,000) will be utilized to construct a stage/fine arts room, two team rooms, and a vocational center that will include two classrooms and a shop. With the limited opportunities we currently have for elective instruction, I am extremely excited about the possibilities this bond will afford our high school students for years to come.

Also relating to the high school, you should be aware that Principal Lawrence has accepted a position in Wyoming and consequently will not be returning. However, I am personally excited to report that the Board has authorized me to return as the high school principal. In opening the high school in the fall of 2003, I am grateful to return to open the new wing in the fall of 2008. We will also be hiring an assistant principal in the near future to work at the middle and high school.

There are a myriad of other new items I would like to address with you at this time but will choose to mention only one. This year, the State is requiring all students identified as “English Language Learners” to participate in 20 hours per week of English language instruction. Given the relatively small size of our district, this will significantly impact the schedules for teachers and students at all three schools. I will be holding community meetings in the next few weeks to discuss the program so please be looking for the times and locations and plan on attending.

With a new year rapidly approaching, I look forward to the first day of school and introducing our new teachers and programs. I hope that we can get a flood of parents and community volunteers in the schools to assist in the development of our educational goals.

In the meantime, please feel free to give me a call at any time if I can be of assistance to you in any way.

Go D-Backs, Scorpions, and Eagles!
